Aquatic rehabilitation is,
as the name implies, rehabilitation therapy or exercise that takes place
in the water. It is an excellent place to begin a rehabilitation
program for a wide range of musculoskeletal disorders.
The water is an ideal setting
for rehabilitation exercise, particularly if you are experiencing
high pain levels or cannot tolerate traditional land-based exercise. Aquatic rehab allows you to work toward regaining the function of
affected areas of your body in a non-weight-bearing environment, and
at the same time helps you maintain or gain body fitness.
Aquatic rehabilitation may
also be used to build endurance and power, and increase muscular strength, flexibility,
coordination, and balance - all important skills that will help the patient
resume activities with full function as quickly as possible.
Benefits of aquatic rehabilitation
also include:
- Reduced weight-bearing forces on the orthopedic system.
- Reduction in muscular pain and spasms.
- Increased joint range of motion.
- Increased micro-circulation.
- Increased patient motivation.
- Maintenance of fitness.
At the Orthopedic Hospital of
Oklahoma, our team of specially trained therapists works with patients
to maximize their progression through rehabilitation. As in all areas
of our hospital, we have gone to great lengths to ensure our patients have
the highest level of care available through the professionals who work
with our patients and in the state-of-the-art equipment available, including
our SwimEX 600T pool.
