A bunion is the misalignment
of the big toe joint that causes a protrusion on the side of the foot at
the base of the big toe. Often, the big toe will bend inward toward the
next toe, and even overlap the second toe. This causes the base of the
toe to protrude out of alignment with the rest of the foot. This protrusion
is continually rubbed when wearing shoes and the skin becomes thick in
this area. Wearing tight, pointed shoes, such as high heels, often aggravates
the condition, however, heredity may also play a role.
One of the most important
steps you can take in treating bunions is to wear proper footwear that
does not irritate the bunion. You need to look for shoes with a wide "toe
box" that allows plenty of room in the toe area. Sandals also offer a footwear
alternative. Specially designed bunion pads are also available in many
drugstores. In some instances, surgery may be necessary to correct the
problem.
