Choosing a sport or activity
to participate in should be done with several things in mind. Haphazardly
jumping into an activity may cause injury or problems down the road.
Some factors to consider are:
Your physical condition. For
some people, contact sports are possible, but others might put themselves
at risk by participating in contact sports.
Your interests. Many people
will take on an exercise program to lose weight. They decide to jog,
because “everyone else is doing it.” However, if you hate jogging,
you will most likely quit and may give up on trying to lose weight.
Pick an activity that interests you and stick with it. After a while,
it may be interesting to choose another activity and do that for a while.
The cost. Some activities,
such as snow skiing and water skiing, involve equipment that can be very
costly. Finances should not prevent anyone from exercising.
There are many activities to choose from that cost only the price of a
good pair of shoes.
Motivation. Some people
need a group of people to motivate them. If this is the case, joining
a fitness center or sports club, such as a bicycle club, would be a good
idea. Others like to exercise alone or with one other person.
Is the morning, afternoon, or evening the best time? That depends
on each individual. What are the goals of the exercise? Goals
may vary from losing weight, maintaining weight, improving overall health,
or just to have fun. Whatever the goal, ensure that the activity
is meeting that goal.
Equipment. Some sports
require specific equipment. Make sure that you have the correct equipment,
that it fits properly, and that you are using it in the right way.
Wearing a bicycle helmet wrong could be a fatal mistake.
Knowing what type of nutritional
and fluid intake is necessary to allow the body to maintain adequate nourishment
to sustain the activity.
If a coach or trainer is to
be utilized, they should be picked based on their coaching or training
style, not by the number of wins on their record. This is especially
important for parents to consider when picking teams and activities for
their children.
Amount of commitment to the
activity. Many people will declare they do not have time to exercise.
It may be because they have chosen an activity that does not fit into their
busy schedules. Once you have successfully integrated your chosen
activity into your everyday life, exercise becomes a fulfilling part of
your life. When that occurs, you make the commitment to find time
for exercise. If you become disinterested in playing one particular
sport, another activity will usually be sought out.
