A CT scan is a rapid, painless
procedure that uses an x-ray beam together with a computer to provide a
detailed picture of the internal portions of organs or tissue. The
scan provides a series of pictures, each of a thin layer of an organ or
tissue. Putting the series of pictures together produces a three-dimensional
view of the organ examined. The procedure may take between 10 and 30 minutes
during which time you need to remain extremely still. The table moves you
through a round hole in the middle of a piece of equipment called a gantry.
If an even more detailed
picture of an area is needed, we can inject a contrast medium or dye, which
will help clarify parts of the picture. There is only a minimal amount
of discomfort when the dye is injected into your vein.
