A myelogram is an x-ray study
of the spinal canal and the nerve roots. To obtain a myelogram, a dye is
injected into the spinal canal around the spinal cord. The dye circulates
through the canal, and x-ray pictures are taken of the spinal cord and
vertebral column.
Prior to the test, you are
given a medication to help you relax. During the test you lie on your stomach
on a special table and dye is injected into your lower back. The table
tilts your body up and down so the contrast medium moves to different areas
of the spinal canal. The test usually takes about 45 minutes.
Your doctor's office will
give you specific instructions about how you should prepare for the myelogram
as well as information about the recovery process following the procedure.
